From protest to organized advocacy
In the aftermath of the Taliban takeover, Afghan women faced severe restrictions on education, employment, movement, public participation and other fundamental rights. Women activists, students, teachers, lawyers and professionals organized to resist erasure and demand justice.
WJM’s early work included women-led protests, public statements, education initiatives, awareness campaigns, humanitarian support and international advocacy. As repression increased, the movement developed safer forms of organizing, documentation and engagement with international partners and human rights institutions.
2021–2022: resistance and education
The movement participated in and supported protests demanding “Bread, Work, Freedom” and women’s right to education, work and political participation. It also developed educational and awareness initiatives for girls and women affected by school closures and restrictions.
2023–2026: documentation, international advocacy and support
WJM expanded its documentation, research, advocacy, training, cultural activities and international engagement. The movement has participated in international meetings and conferences, collaborated with civil society and human rights organizations, and worked to keep Afghan women’s rights on international agendas.
WJM is registered in Norway and continues to engage with women and partners inside Afghanistan and in exile. For security reasons, public materials intentionally omit sensitive operational details and identifying information.
Our continuing commitment
WJM continues to work for education, freedom, dignity, justice and meaningful participation for Afghan women and girls, while calling for accountability for violations of their rights.
